Distracted Driving Fines Increased for Ontario Drivers

As of January 1, 2019, drivers who are caught using a hand-held device in any capacity while driving will be fined up to $1,000 with a three-day licence suspension and three demerit points. Drivers with more than one distracted driving conviction will see that fine increase to $2,000, a seven-day licence suspension and six demerit points. Anyone with more than two convictions will face a fine of up to $3,000 and lose their licence for 30 days. This is welcome news for cyclists in Ontario. Let’s hope it has an impact on driving behaviour.
