Is House Arrest enough for Killing a Cyclist?
On June 15, 2020, Safet Tairoski, a 54 year old husband and father, was struck from behind by a vehicle in Markham. His killer, Alexandra Forrestall, abandoned him at the scene of the crime where he later died from his injuries.
Ms. Forrestall, a 26 year-old woman from York Region, has received a 12-month conditional sentence, with two years probation, 100 hours of community service and a three-year driving ban after striking, abandoning and ultimately killing the York Region father of three.
This sends the wrong message. We need strong vulnerable user laws that act as a deterrent and help protect innocent people like Mr. Tairoski from the significant imbalance of power between a vehicle and a bicycle.
Our condolences to Mr. Tairoski’s family
