-
obey all laws
Stop at stop signs. Obey traffic lights. Signal your turns. For more, check out the Ministry of Transportation’s Safe Cycling Guide.
-
WEAR A HELMET
Whether you’re 8 or 48, always wear a helmet and sunglasses to protect your head and eyes.
-
RIDE ON THE RIGHT
Ride as close to the right side of the road as it is safe to do. Never cross the yellow line or ride into on-coming traffic.
-
PASS ON THE LEFT
As you approach a cyclist, let them know you’re there. Tell them you will be passing and always pass on the left.
-
NO MORE THAN 2 BY 2
When riding in a group, ride no more than 2 people wide. In heavily trafficked areas and on hilly roads, always ride single file.
-
CALL OUT HAZARDS
When riding in a group, always call out hazards. Point at pot holes. Shout “Car Back” or “Car Up” if cars are passing or approaching.
-
BE CAREFUL IN THE RAIN
Wet conditions cause slick conditions. Avoid riding on painted road surfaces and manhole covers. They get slippery when wet.
-
STAY BACK OF VEHICLES
Use caution when stopped at intersections with large vehicles. Assume they can’t see you. Try to stay 10 m back from the rear of all vehicles.
-
NO HALF WHEELING
When riding in a group, do not overlap your front wheel with the rear wheel of the rider in front of you. Stay at least 1m behind the rear wheel.
-
FOCUS ON RIDING
Look ahead at all times. Use common sense when grabbing a water bottle or energy bar. Don’t turn and talk while you are riding with someone.
-
HOLD YOUR LINE
When riding in a group and turning, remember to stay on the same path. Don’t cut people off beside you or behind you.
-
ASK FOR ADVICE
If you are new to cycling in a group, don’t be afraid. Ask for advice. Stay to the back until you are comfortable and gain experience.
-
BE COURTEOUS
No matter what you see on the road, always be respectful. Remember that everything you do reflects on all cyclists. It pays to be polite.
